CAMBRIDGE, ROMSEY LABOUR CLUB WAR MEMORIAL

World War 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

This memorial was situated inside the Romsey Labour Club in Mill Road, Cambridge, until it was closed. It takes the form of a wooden plaque with an arched roof, a list of those who died and then five columns of names of those that served.

CALDECOAT Ernest George

Private, 5933558, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died on 28th January 1942 aged 26 years. Son of George and Laura Caldecoat; husband of Edna May Caldecoat of Cambridge. He is buried at Taiping War Cemetery, Coll. Grave 1. A. 1-12. Malaysia. See also Cambridge Guildhall

Extract from Cambridge Daily News in 1945:

Killed in Action. —News has been received by Mrs. E. Caldecoat, of 14, John Street, Cambridge, that her husband Ernest G. Caldecoat, 2nd Battalion, Cambs. Regiment, was killed in action on 27th January, 1942. This is the first news received since he was reported missing in February, 1942. He was previously employed by W. Tilley, newsagent Mill Road.

DALDRY Dennis Percy
Private, 14643859, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Died on 25th December 1944 aged 19 years. Son of Percy Walter and Lottie Daldry of Cambridge. He is buried at Phaleron War Cemetery, 18. A. 7. Greece. See also Cambridge Guildhall

Extract from Cambridge Daily News in 1945:

Killed on Christmas Day.—Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Daldry, of 30, Argyle Street, Cambridge, have received the sad- news that their son, Pte. Dennis Percy Daldry, aged 19, Beds. and Herts. Regiment, was killed in action on Christmas Day in the Central Mediterranean theatre of war. Before joining up Pte, Daldry was employed by the Cherry Hinton Road branch of the Co-operative Society. He was educated at Romsey Council School, for whom he played football, and later at Coleridge Senior, School.
DIXON Walter [Philip Arthur]
Private, 5827933, 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died from dysentery on 28th May 1943 aged 25 years. He is buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, 2. F. 56. Thailand. See also Cambridge Guildhall

Extract from Cambridge Daily News in 1945:

Died Whilst Prisoner of War.—News has been received by Mrs. Gladys Dixon, of 150, Vinery Road, Cambridge, that her husband, Private Waiter P. A. Dixon, 4th Suffolk, died whilst a prisoner of war on. May 28th, 1943, of dysentery" He was the eldest son of Mr, and Mrs. W. Dixon, of Durban Villa, Girton. Before being called up he was employed by Messrs. W Eaden Lilley and Co. Ltd.
FERGUSON Frederick [Edward]
Private, 5828935, 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died from beri beri on 13th August 1943 aged 26 years. Son of Herbert Louis and Florence Ellen Ferguson of Cambridge. He is buried at Sai Wen War Cemetery, V. K. 10. China, (including Hong Kong.) See also Cambridge Guildhall

Death of Pte. Ferguson
in Far East

Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Ferguson, of 8. Greville Road, Cambridge, have received official news from the War Office that their eldest son, Pte. Frederick Edward Ferguson, of the Suffolk Regiment, has died from beri¬beri whilst a prisoner of war in Japanese hands.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson first heard that he was a prisoner last Good Friday, and had since had three cards from him saying that he was working for pay and that he was in his usual health. Aged 25, Pte. Ferguson was employed in the “Cambridge Daily News” Printing Works for many years before joining up in January, 1940. He was an old Central School boy.

PECK Leonard James

Petty Officer Motor Mechanic, C/MX 69284, H M Lighter 15, Royal Navy. Died on 28th April 1941 aged 20 years. Son of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Peck of Cambridge. No known grave. He is commemorated at Chatham Naval Memorial, 48. 2. UK. See also Cambridge Guildhall

Motor Mechanic
L. J. Peck

Mr. and Mrs. B. Peck, of 37, Stourbridge Grove, Cambridge, have received news that their only son, Motor Mechanic Leonard J. Peck, has been reported missing while on war service. The Commodore in his letter to the parents says: “There is insufficient evidence at present to show whether your son may be alive or not.”

Motor Mechanic Peck was educated at the Brunswick and Central Schools. For some years he was employed at Cook’s Motor Works, Newmarket Road, and afterwards for a short time was in the service of the Cambridge Co-operative Society.

He joined the Navy last year, at the age of 20.
