The Cambridge University, Trinity College World War 2 memorial is in the form of an engraved stone tablet on the west wall of the College Chapel. The west wall of the Ante-Chapel, behind the statue of Newton, is dedicated to a huge memorial of Portland stone, engraved by David Kindersley in 1951 with the names of 384 Trinity men who died in the Second World War

EARDLEY-WILMOT, MC Anthony Revell
Major 104182, 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards. Killed in action in North West Europe 11 August 1944. Aged 34. Born 9 Janusry 1910 at Frimley Green, Surrey. Son of Maj. T. Eardley-Wilmot, D.S.O., and Mildred Clare Eardley-Wilmot, of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Admitted as Entrance Exhibitioner at Trinity 1 October 1929; B.A. 1932; M.A. (Cantab.) 1938. His father fell in the 1914-1918 War. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Admitted to Honourable Artillery Company in 1939 resident 24, Thurloe Square, London S.W.7. Award of Military Cross announed in London Gazette 19 October 1944, Folio 165. Buried in TILLY-SUR-SEULLES WAR CEMETERY, Calvados, France. Plot IX. Row H. Grave 9.
ECKERSLEY Peter Thorp

Lieutenant (A) (Pilot), H.M.S. Raven, 758 Squadron, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Killed while flying out of Eastleigh, Hampshire, in a Percival Proctor IA, serial number P6113, whent he aircraft spun into the ground near Winchester, Hampshire, died from multiple injuries 13 August 1940. Aged 36. Native of Ashley, Cheshire. Born 2 July 1904 at Lowton, Lancashire. Son of William Eckersley, C.B.E., J.P., and Eva Mary Eckersley (nee Thorp), of Tyldesley; husband of Audrey E. J. Eckersley, of Ashley, Cheshire. Educated at Rugby. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity 1 October 1922. J.P.; Member of Parliament for Exchange Division of Manchester 1935–40. Captain of Lancashire County Cricket Club 1929–35. In the 1911 census he was the son of William and Eva Mary Exkersley, aged 6, born Lowton, Lancashire, resident Lime House, Lowton, Newton Le Willows, Lancashire. In the 1921 census he was aged 17, born Lowton, Lancashire, a boarder at Rugby School, resident 2, Barby Road, Rugby, Warwickshire, Buried in TYLDESLEY CEMETERY, Lancashire. Section G. Grave 340.

Second Lieutenant 87192, 12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's), Royal Armoured Corps. Killed in action in France 27 May 1940. Aged 25. Born 22 October 1914 at Hatfield Place, Hatfield Peverel, Hertfordshire [Army Roll states born Essex], resident Hertfordshire. Son of Lieutenant-Colonel Kenelm William Edward Edgcumbe (6th Earl Mount Edgcumbe - 1944) and Lilian Agnes Edgcumbe, of Holwell Court, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Educated at Eton. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity 1 October 1934; B.A. 1937. Buried in ESQUELBECQ MILITARY CEMETERY, Nord, France. Plot 2. Row H. Grave 28. See also Essendon Memorial, Hertfordshire.

ELGAR, MC Hugh Smiley

Lieutenant 265716, 2nd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action in North West Europe 18 April 1945. Aged 21. Born 7 August 1923 at Larne, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, resident Bournemouth. Son of Reverend Alfred James and Eileen M. K. Elgar, of Bournemouth, Hampshire. Educated at Eton. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity 13 October 1942. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)[London Gazette 10 May 1945, Folio 1409-1410]. Buried in BECKLINGEN WAR CEMETERY, Niedersachsen, Germany. Plot 2. Row C. Grave 13.

KILLED IN ACTION

The death is reported in action of Lieut. Hugh Smiley Edgar, King's Royal Rifle Corps, elder son of Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Elgar, of Forest House, Bournemouth. He was 21.

Educated at Dragon School, Oxford, Eton College and Trinity College. he hoped to take up biology. He joined the 60th Rifles (K.R.R.C.) in, July, 1942, and was at once sent to an O.C.T.U., later rejoining the 60th as a Lieutenant. Eventually he joined the 2nd Battalion at Worthing in March in preparation for D-Day.

Wounded at Caen in August, he was sent home to a hospital in Cheshire, returning again and being wounded in March. He was in hospital for a few days, but soon rejoined and was killed fighting in Germany.

An officer of the 60th, Lieut.-Col. E. Campbell, wrote of him that “he was a first-rate young officer with all the best qualities of an officer of the 60th and I had such great reports of his gallantry and his power of leadership and care of his men. Such young fellows can ill be spared.”

Posthumous M.C.

Posthumous award is announced of the Military Cross to Lieut. Hugh Smiley Elgar, elder son of the Rev. A. J. and Mrs. Elgar, Forest House, Bournemouth.

Educated at Eton and Trinity College. Cambridge, Lieut. Elgar went to Normandy on D-day with his regiment, the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and was twice wounded

Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) J/5332, 9 (R.A.F.) Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, Bomber Command. Killed in action flying out of Honington, Suffolk, in a Vickers Wellington III, serial number X3369, when the aircraft was believed to have been shot down by flak near Rostock 9 May 1942. Born 24 January 1916 in New York, U.S.A.; a Canadian citizen. Son of Sir Gilbert Boswell Eliott of Stobs, 10th Baronet, and Lady Dora Flournoy Eliott (née Hopkins). Educated at Elstree School, Hertfordshire 1926-1929; Harrow, 1929-1934. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity 1 October 1934; B.A. Economics 1937. His sports interests were golf, tennis, riding, swimming and shooting. He also had a Private Pilot’s Certificate in the U.S.A. He worked at Eliott Young & Co.in London as a clerk, 1937-1938 and later was a partner with Gilbert Eliott & Co., New York. Buried in BERLIN 1939-1945 WAR CEMETERY, Berlin, Germany. Plot 8. Row A. ELLIOT Herbert Hugh

Pilot Officer (Observer) 124655, 70 Operational Training Unit, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, East Africa Command. Killed while flying out of Nakuru, Kenya, in a Bristol Blenheim IV, serial number V5869, when the aircraft flew into a tree and crashed at Isolo when low flying during a training flight 13 July 1942. Aged 33. Born 3 June 1909 at Hove, West Sussex. Native of Bourne End, Buckinghamshire. Son of Hugh and Rosa Elliot; husband of Kate Marjorie Elliot (nee Iles), of Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, married October to December Quarter 1939 in Wandsworth Registration District, London. Educated at Westminster School. Admitted as Entrance Exhibitioner, Westminster Exhibitioner, at Trinity 1 October 1927; B.A. Hons. (Cantab). 1930. In the 1921 census he was the son of Hugh and Rosa Elliot, aged 12, born Hove, Sussex, resident 9, Lower Camden, Chislehurst, Bromley, Kent. Buried in NANYUKI WAR CEMETERY, Kenya. Plot 1. Grave 34.

Killed in action as a victim of a V-2 rocket strike in Belgium on 8 February 1945. Born 8 May 1912 at 11 St James’s Square, London. Son of Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness, C.B., C.M.G., D.L., R.N.V.R., 2nd Earl of Iveagh, and of the Countess of Iveagh, C.B.E., of Elveden, Suffolk; husband of Elizabeth Cecilia, Viscountess Elveden, of Regents Park, London (married 22 July 1936 in St Margaret, Westminster, Middlesex, Lady Elizabeth Cecilia Hare, daughter of the 4th Earl of Listowel). Educated at Eton. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity 1 October 1931. In the 1921 census he was the son of Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness Viscount Elveden and Gwendolen Florence Mary Viscountess Elveden, aged 9, born London, resident Pyrford Court, Pyrford, Surrey. EVELYN Peter George

Major 47090, 6th Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Missing presumed killed in action in Tunisia 17 March 1943. Aged 33. Born 28 December 1909 at Buckingham Gate, London, resident Surrey. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Harcour Chichester Evelyn of Wotton, Surrey; husband of Patricia L M Evelyn (nee McCalmont), married April to June Quarter 1934 in Stow on the Wold Registration District, Gloucestershire. Educated at Winton House School, Winchester, and Eton. Admitted as Pensioner at Trinity 1 October 1928; B.A. 1931. In the 1921 census he was aged 11 years 6 months, born London, a Pupil at Winton House School, Andover Road, Winchester, Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on MEDJEZ-EL-BAB MEMORIALl, Tunisia. MR. P. G. EVELYN AND MISS
McCALMONT

The marriage took place on Saturday at Adlestrop Church of Mr. Peter George Evelyn, Grenadier Guards, younger son of the late Mr. John Evelyn and of Mrs. Evelyn, of Wotton House, Surrey, and Miss Patricia McCalmont, eldest daughter of Brigadier-General and Mrs. R. McCalmont, of Adlestrop House, Gloucestershire. The Rev. C. O. Bevan officiated, assisted by the Rev. F. R. Wilberforce.

The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a simple gown of heavy parch ment-tinted crepe woven with gold, with a train and veil of old Honiton lace. She had a wreath of camellias and carried a bouquet of lilies. Clare Shennam, the Hon. Tom Ashton and Jeremy Graham were the trainbearers.

The pages wore the uniform of officers of the Grenadier Guards in 1830, and the little girl had a picture frock of pale yellow organdie-muslin.

There were seven grown-up bridesmaids—Miss Maureen and Miss Lilah McCalmont (sisters of the bride), Miss Hazel Houstoun (cousin of the bride), Miss Amaryllis Bryce (cousin of the bridegroom), Miss Jane Noel, Miss Wanda Swetenham and Miss Daphne Alston. They wore long-sleeved dresses of flowered chiffon, with wreaths of delphinium blossom in their hair, and carried bouquets of mixed blue flowers. Mr. Lewis Stucley, Grenadier Guards, was "best man," and N.C.O.'s of the Grenadier Guards formed a guard of honour as the bride and bridegroom left the church.

Mrs. McCalmont afterwards held a reception at Adlestrop House
