Mr. Taylor Dyson's Gift
In Memory of
Soldier Son

MR. TAYLOR DYSON, former headmaster of Almondbury Grammar School, last night presented a chairman's insignia of office to the Almondbury branch of the British Legion.

Mr. Dyson, who now lives at Christchurch, Hants, presented a gold and enamel replica of the British Legion badge on a blue silk cord, to the branch in memory of his son, Lt. Marcus L. Dyson, who died as a result of illness contracted while on active service overseas. Lt. Dyson was an officer in the East Yorkshire Regiment.

Making the presentation Mr. Dyson said that he had had many proud memories of his son and his son's love for Almondbury. When he and his wife were considering some form of memorial for their son they felt that it was best to identify it with something which was alive and figured in the life of the village, and for that reason they immediately thought of the Almondbury branch of the British Legion.

Receiving the gift the President, Dr. H. Maffin, said, they were proud to perpetuate the memory of "an honourable and grand lad." He then invested the chairman of the branch, Mr. W. Foster, with his new insignia of office.

In responding Mr. Foster said that every chairman of the branch would feel more than ordinary pride in wearing the token of his office.

A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Dyson on the Motion of Dr. Maffin, seconded by Mr. L. L. Schofield. Mr. Schofield said that Dr. Maffin and Mr. Taylor Dyson had between them a unique record of service in the life of the village, Dr. Maffin for fifty-five years a doctor in the village and Mr. Dyson, as headmaster of Almondbury Grammer School for thirty-three years.

Home Guard Officer
Killed in Road Accident
Well-Known Motorist who had
Driven at Brooklands

CAPTAIN Peter John Newson Garrett, second in command of the Avonmouth Company of the Home Guard and well-known in Highcliffe, is stated to have been killed instantly when his car came in collision with a lorry at Bransgore on Wednesday in last week.

Major F. M. Fish, Commander of the same Home Guard Company, who lives at Walkford, and formerly resided at Lymington, was a passenger in the car, and received head injuries and concussion.

Mr. P. B. Ingoldby (County Coroner) opened the inquest on Capt. Garrett at Christchurch on Friday and adjourned it until May 29, so that evidence could be given by Major Fish.

In addition to his widow, Captain Garrett leaves three children, the eldest being six years of age.

When the inquest was opened, Mrs. Louisa Nora Margaret Garrett, of Seaway Avenue, Friars Cliff, Mudeford, the widow, said that her husband was 49 years of age and of independent means. He held the rank of captain in the Home Guard, having left the Army about a year ago owing to leg trouble, after serving in the ranks when called up at the outbreak of war, prior to which he had volunteered for service.

He was an experienced motorist, belonging to several motor clubs, and had frequently driven at Brooklands.

On Wednesday morning he left home in his car to go to Home Guard headquarters, and it had been his intention to go on to a Home Guard meeting at Ringwood later in the day.

Lorry Driver's Evidence

A lorry driver named William John Thomas Seymour, of Parsonage Barn Lane, Ringwood, told the Coroner that about a quarter to 1 on Wednesday he was driving a lorry along the Ripley Road, towards the Ringwood Road, near North Ripley, at a speed of 8 to 10 m.p.h.

At the junction with the Kingwood Road he pulled up and sounded his horn, as his view was obstructed by trees on his left. Hearing no other horn sounded he began to drive into the Ringwood Road and turned to the left towards Ringwood.

Witness said he then saw a car coming from the direction at Kingwood at a fast speed, well over the crown of the road on his (witness's) near side, about 200 yards away.

Witness pulled his lorry into its near-side, but the car continued on the same course and he (witness) again sounded his horn, shouted to the driver and swerved further to his left on to the grass verge to avoid a head-on collision.

The car had stopped about 4 feet at the rear of the lorry, and witness went at once to render what aid he could to the driver and passenger.

Answering the Coroner, witness said the car was travelling at a fast speed for that type at road. He considered the corner was a dangerous one.

Had he pulled his lorry up before going on the grass there would have been a head-on collision. He did all he could do to avoid an accident.

When he got to the car the driver appeared to be dead and the passenger was badly injured.

Replying to Mr. P. D. Stuart (who appeared for him), witness said that at the time of the accident there was plenty of room for the car to have gone by his lorry on the off-side.

In answer to Police-Inspector W. P. Thomas, he said when collision occurred, the near front wheel of the lorry was two feet on the grass verge, and at the moment of impact the lorry was just moving.

When he came out of the side road be had kept well in to his near-side, and as he came round the near wheel was never more than 18 inches to two feet from the verge.

His lorry was seven feet wide, said witness, in answer to the inspector and the Coroner said the road was 17 feet wide.

Lieutenant George Smith, R.A.M.C. said he was called to the scene of the accident, and saw Captain Garrett on the grass verge.

He was dead, and, in the opinion 0f witness, his death was instantaneous—being caused by a fractured skull and injury to the brain.

The Coroner intimated that the passenger had received head injuries ant concussion, and was unfit to give evidence, so the inquest would be adourned in order that he could attend.

Lieutenant Smith said it would be some time before Major Fish was fit to attend, and the Coroner adjourned the inquest until May 29th.

The Funeral

Captain Garrett was given a military funeral by the Home Guard, of whom about 70 attended parading under Captain Gibbons. The coffin, draped with the Union Jack. and bearing the deceased's forage cap and belt was drawn by 20 Home Guards of the Highcliffe company from Humphreys Bridge, where they assembled to meet it, up Shelley Hill to Highcliffe Church, and 6 sergeants of the Avonmouth Company acted as pall bearers. There was a Guard of Honour which formed into two lines at the entrance to the church where the cortege was received by the Rev. H. C. Knocker, who is temporarily in charge of the parish pending the appointment of the new Vicar.

The Guard of Honour also lined the graveside and the body was lowered into its resting place by the six pall bearers. Nearly a dozen officers attended, each of whom filed past the grave and saluted their former colleague. and the other ranks present also afterwards filed past.

In addition to the family mourners others present included Mrs. and Miss Fish, Brig.-General J. G. Browne, C.M.G. D.S.O. and Colonel F. Adams, D.S.O. (the last named representing the British Legion).

The New Forest Battalion of the Home Guard was represented by Major Scott and the New Milton Platoon by Sergt. Rooke, and Volunteers R. H. Sears and Padfield. The many beautiful floral tributes included wreaths from the Home Guard, including one from the deceased's own company and another from the New Milton platoon.

NAVAL HERO'S DEATH

Holder of a bar to the D.S.O., Captain George Bibby Hartford, R.N., of Snakemoor House, Botley, Hants, has died suddenly on active service.

Naval Officer's
Tragic Death

After proposing a vote of thanks to the artists who had entertained servicemen at an establishment on the South Coast. Capt. George Bibby Hartford, D.S.O., R.N., collapsed and died in his chair in full view of the audience. He was 58.

He had been in hospital for several weeks and returned to his duties a few weeks ago. He lived at Snakemoor House, Durley.

He was an extremely popular officer, his amiable disposition gaining him many solid friendships, and in the words of a friend who was sitting by his side at the time of the tragic occurrence. “He died with the cheers of the ship’s company ringing in his ears.”

The son of Dr. Henry W. Hartford, of Christchurch, he was born In Hampshire In 1883, and had retained his interest and connexion with the county throughout his life. He was educated at Eastman’s Royal Naval Academy at Northwood Park, near Winchester, and as a cadet joined the Britannia at Dartmouth. In 1902 he became a sub-lieutenant and at the close of that year entered the R.N. College at Greenwich.

The day before he received his second stripe he found himself, at the aged of 21, in command of the torpedo boat No. 74, and thus had the honour of commanding one of H.M. ships in full commission for one whole day as a sub-lieutenant, an experience which does not fall to the lot of every naval officer, and for him the command of a ship when still only 21 years old was a thrilling experience.

Captain Hartford won the D.S.O. in the Great War for sinking the last enemy submarine destroyed before the Armistice, and was awarded a bar to the decoration last May for “leadership, endurance, and devotion to duty.”

A the outbreak of the Great War he commanded H.M.S. Electra in the Nore Defence Flotilla, but soon removed to H.M.S. Acorn In which, from November, 1914, to July, 1917, he was on destroyer patrol work at Scapa Flow. During this time he rescued 300 officers and men belonging to H.M.S. King Edward VII when she was sunk by a mine off the Orkneys.

He went to live at Duriey on his retirement in 1922 and there wrote his reminiscences under the title of “Commander R.N.”

For many years Capt. Hartford had been well known in public life of the county, and his services on the Droxford Rural Council were much valued. At one time he was Vice-President of the East Hants Conservative Association. Capt. Hertford was a staunch Churchman, and served for a time as a churchwarden of the Holy Cross, Durley.

He was particularly interested in the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, and was in 1936 elected as a Governor. He took a kindly Interest In the village where he had made his home, and gave his fullest support to most of the parochial institutions. He was Chairmen of the Durley Cricket Club, and Vice-Chairman of the Durley Parish Council.

Captain Hartford was at one time Vice-President of the East Hants Conservative Association. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Alice Wells. There were two children of the marriage? one son and one daughter. His first wife died in 1920, and he afterwards married Evelyn Isobel, widow of Mr. Charles H. Ross, who survives him.

HIGHCLIFFE PARENTS BEREAVED
Miss O. Macfarlane’s Death By Enemy Action

Mr. and Mrs. James W. Macfarlane, of Lymington-road, Highcliffe, have received the very sad news of the death of their only child, Miss Olive Lees Macfarlane, S.R.N., S.C.M., by enemy action off Singapore on her 27th birthday, 14th February last.
Miss Macfarlane attended the Bournemouth School for Girls, where she matriculated, until the age of 18 when she went to the Middlesex Hospital, London, to train as a nurse, atterwards gaining further experienre at the Royal Maternity Hospital, Glasgow.
Her aim was to work abroad, to work for something wider and bigger than service at home could provide, and she studied hard with this object, gaining a certificate in tropical diseases.

On 11th December, 1939, Miss Mactarlane went out to Malaya as a sister at Bangsar Hospital, Kuala Lampur and as she had done at school and during her hospital training, quickly gained the love and appreciation of everyone she became associated with. She became engaged whilst in Malaya and was to have been married in December next.

She spent two happy years in her work at Kuala Lampur and a recent letter from the matron of the hospital spoke of her splendid character and of the thoroughness in her work.

Miss Macfarlane was at one time rconnected with St. Mark’s Church, Highcliffe, and was the leader of a Brownie Pack.

Mr. and Mrs, Macfarlane came to Highcliffe in 1927, and they will receive the sincerest sympathy in their very deep loss.

FOUR NAZIS IN THE BAG
For Christchurch Sniper

Sniping from the ruins of a cottage in No-Man's-Land, near Caen, Sergt. Eric Crockford, of 55, Avon-road, Christchurch, bagged four panzer grenadiers in quick succession before he was obliged to retire in the face of enemy shelling.

Sergt. Crockfotd is one of his battalion's ace marksmen. Camouflaged in his sniper-suit, an affair of drab-coloured rags, garnished with lay, twigs or leaves to blend with his surroundings and render him invisible to the enemy, he lies in wait with his mate for any front-line Nazi who is rash enough to show himself within range of his rifle.

On the day the sniper sergeant bagged his quartet of S.S. infantrymen the Germans got jittery and started firing an anti-tank gun at the ruined cottages from which they spotted the snipers' fire. But the result was a walk-over. Sergt. Crock ford and his fellow snipers had killed more than a dozen of the enemy. The enemy had not even scratched one of the British snipers.

Cpl. M. B. Venning Killed In Accident

Only three weeks ago we recorded with regret that Signaller Cyril W. Venning, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Venning, of Danehuret, 66 Stour-road, Christchurch was reported missing and believed killed. He went down with the Cossack.

Now their eldest son, Cpl. Maurice Beresford Venniug, has died. He was on an Army vehicle which was involved in an accident on Thursday last week and sustained serious injuries from which he succumbed in hospital on Sunday. The driver of the vehicle escaped with only slight injuries.

Cpl. Venning, who was 27, joined the Hampshire Regiment as a Territorial in May, 1939, and at the time of his death was in the M.T. section of H.Q. Company. Before the war he was in the motor business at Brockenhurst and was always keen on motoring as well as gardening. He was a server at the Priory Church.

Letters of condolence are still reaching Mr. and Mrs. Venning in regard to the death of their second son. The greatest sympathy will he extended to them in the death of their eldest son and to the young widow who married Cpl. Venning in January last year.

At Tuesday's meeting of Christchurch Chamber of Trade the President, Mr. J. Vaughan, expressed the sympathy of all the members. He recalled that Mr Venning was one of the earliest members of the Christchurch and District Chamber of Trade, was President in 1931, the second year of the Chamber's existence, and afterwards honorary secretary.

Mr. Venning is the Christchurch representative of this newspaper.

The military funeral takes place this afternoon. There will be a service at the Priory Church conducted by Canon W. H. Gay at 2.30 and the interment will follow at Christchurch Cemetery. Officers and other ranks as well as bearers will come from the 'Hampshire Regiment.

Floral tributes have been received from all ranks, H.Q. Company; Officer Commanding, Officers and other ranks; Se.rgeants' Mess; Officers' Mess members; and all ranks, Motor Transport.
