World
War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Transcribed & Researched Nigel Bristow
2005
The
Wilmington memorial lies on the outskirts of Dartford. The memorial
is sitauated in the front grounds of the primary school on High Road,
Wilmington, and is inscribed with the names of 64 men of the small village.
Access to the memorial is limited as it is surrounded by iron railings.
The memorial itself appears to be constructed of white marble. There
is a lower plaque listing the names of those who died in World War 2.
The names on the Wrld War 1 section are listed by year.

This
is the text of the article in the local newspaper at the time
of Corporal Bugg’s death:
Mr &
Mrs Buggs of The Ship, Puddledock, are mourning the loss of
their son Corporal W. Buggs, who was killed in action on August
16th 1917. He was educated at Wilmington School and enlisted
in December 1914. A letter received from the Chaplain, states
“He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him and
his name stood for anything that was brave and soldier like.
He was absolutely without fear and the men would have followed
him anywhere. It will be some little comfort to you to know
after he was hit he did not suffer, as death was instantaneous.
I expect you have seen in the papers, how splendidly the battalion
did at Langemarck, it was there your boy fell and it is to him
and brave fellows like him that victory was won.”
A letter was also received from his Captain stating he was killed.
He says “ He was a good NCO and will be a great loss to
the company. Just before he was killed, he did some very good
work in keeping his platoon together under heavy shell-fire
and if he had lived he would undoubtedly have received some
decoration in recognition of his bravery. His death has caused
a gap which it will be difficult to fill”
