Enlisted 2 February 1904 for 5 years and 7 years reserve, height 5 feet 10½ inches, chest 36 inches, dark brown hair, blue eyes, fresh comlexion. Transferred to Reserve 2 February 1909, recalled 13 July 1914. Baptised 30 July 1882 in Ulverston, Lancaster, son of William and Mary Seward, resident Ulverston, Lancashire. Admitted to Ulverston Church of England Infant School 17 August 1885, son of William Seward, resident The Gill, Ulveston, left 21 August 1885. In the 1891 census he was aged 8, born Ulveston, Lancashire, a boarder at Market Street, Ulverston, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 28, born Ulveston, Lancashire, a Railway boiler washerout, married to Lucy Annie Seward with one daughter, resident 215, Burnley Road, Colne, Lancashire. A LEEDS CAPTAIN DROWNED.

Captain Eric Cograve SIMPSON, elder son of Mr. John T. Simpson, of Sholebroke Mount, Leeds, who had been reported as missing, is now definitely stated to have been drowned at sea, and his body has been recovered. He was returning home from Salonica, when the vessel which he was on board was lost. He joined the forces in August, 1914, and having previously spent some years of training on English and Continental railways, he was quickly placed on Government railway work. He was sent out to France, and was afterwards transferred to Salonica.

[Listed as Sick Berth Reserve on memorial] Junior Reserve Attendant M/9131, H.M.S. Clan MacNaughton, Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve. Lost with his ship, 3 February 1915, she was on patrol duty and was last heard of on February 3rd. There was bad weather prevailing at the time and a search of the area where the Clan MacNaughton had been cruising revealed quantity of wreckage but no signs of the ship. Aged 35. Holder Up/Boilermaker, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Born Bilston, Staffordshire 16 February 1880. Member of the United Society of Boilermakers & Iron Shipbuilders, trade Boilermakers & Iron Shipbuilders, joined 19 October 1901. Enlisted 2 August 1914 for 1 year, height 5 feet 8½ inches, chest 36¼ inches, fair hair, blue eyes, pale complexion. Husband of Eliza Rebecca Smith, of 3, Tomlinson Street, Horwich, Lancashire. In the 1881 census he was aged 1, born Bilston, Staffordshire, son of David and Sarah Smith, resident Crown & Anchor, 60, Oxford Street, Bilston, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 21, born Bilston, a General labourer, son of Sarah Smith (a widow), resident 21, John Street, Bilston, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 31, born Bilston, Staffordshire, a Holder up boilermaker, married to Eliza N Smith with one son, resident 3, Tomlinson Street, Horwich, Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 8.

In the 1901 census he was newborn, born Southport, Lancashire, son of Joseph and Mary E Stevens, resident 48, Stamford Road, Birkdale, Ormskirk, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 10, born Birkdale, Southport, at school, son of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Stevens, resident 71, Kew Road, Birkdale, Southport, Lancashire. No known grave.
