Admitted to Rainford Church of England School 6 December 1909, son of John Whalley. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Rainford, Lancashire, a Garden boy at Vicarage, son of John and Emma Whalley, resident 2 Junction Road, Rainford, Lancashire (his elder brothers worked for the railway). No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 28.

[Listed as Stoker on memorial] Fireman, S.S. Unity (Goole), Mercantile Marine. Died when his ship was en route from Newhaven for Calais when torpedoed by German submarine UB-5 2 May 1918. Aged 46. Donkeyman, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Born Adlingfleet, resident Goole. Son of the late John and Elizabeth Whitehead; husband of Ruth Rebecca Whitehead (nee Robinson), of 71, Pasture Road, Goole, Yorks, married 31 July 1895 in Ardingfleet, Yorkshire. Baptised 15 October 1871 in Adlingfleet, Yorkshire, son of John and Elizabeth Whitehead. In the 1881 census he was aged 9, born Ardingfleet, Yorkshire, a scholar, son of John and Elizabeth Whitehead, resident Adlingfleet, Goole, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding). In the 1891 census he was aged 19, born Ardingfleet, Yorkshire, a Farm servant, son of John and Elizabeth Whitehead, resident Adlingfleet, Goole, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding). In the 1911 census he was aged 39, born Ardingfleet, Yorkshire, a Donkeyman, married to R R Whitehead with three daughters, resident 21, Estcourt Street, Goole, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding). No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London.

Gibson, and attached to the Return of death in this list of Crew of the 'Unity' official Number 113120, the particulars of the seaman described above as G. Wilson, are Thomas William Gibson, born 1876 at Stratford. Listed as Thomas William GIBSON on CWGC. No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London.
