The
St Peter's Roman Catholic Church war memorial is located at St. Peter's
R.C. Church, Leicester Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire. It takes the
form of a two-stepped, rectangular, base surmounted by a square sectioned
plinth with rounded top corners, followed by a Figure of Christ on the
Cross; there are incised inscriptions and names infilled with black
paint; the whole memorial site is surrounded by paving slabs. There
are 36 names listed for World War 1 and 12 names for World War 2. It
was unveiled 30 September 1922 by the Earl of Denbigh. The names on
the memorial are listed by rank but have been sorted here into alphabetical
order within conflict for ease of reading and research.

MEMORIAL
Unveiling of Cross to Fallen. Members of St. Peter’s.
The
Earl of Denbigh C. V. O., this afternoon unveiled a beautiful monumental
cross which has been erected in the gounds of St. Peter's Chureh,
in memory of the men of St. Peter's congregation who lost their lives
in the great European War. The memoria! consists of a crucifix surmounting
a square base, which is placed on the top of three steps. It is executed
in Portland stone throughout, and the total height is 14 feet, whilst
the steps cover an area of 9 feet.
The
outstanding feature is the sculptured figure, which is a work of art.
The die base is in one solid block, and in itself weighs over two
tons.

great majority of the members of the Church. The Earl of Denbigh was
assisted J. L. Griffiths, D.8.O., who fought gallantly with the Leicesters
in France.

HINCKLEY SCOUTS DEATH.
Pte. John Thomas Payne, of the Leicesters, whose home is in
Priory Row, Hinckley, is officially reported to have been killed
in action on June 29th last, whilst in France. From one who
was with him at the time his relatives learn that be (Pte. Payne)
was shot dead almost immediately after going over the parapet
at a few minutes after seven o'clock on Thursday (the 28th).
Deceased was in his 20th year and enlisted (together with his
brothers, James and Albert) two years ago last May. After receiving
his training at Loughborough and other places, he went from
Louth to France in February last. He was a member of St. Peter's
Church, and formerly acted as bugler in the troop of Scouts
attached to the church. Pte. Albert Payne, brother of the above,
who is in another battalion of the Leicesters, is now in France,
and is expecting a leave about this time. Pte. James Payne,
of the West Yorks, has been dangerously wounded in the chest
and face whilst in France, but is now progressing favourably
in a hospital at. Leeds. Of two other brothers. Pte. Harry Payne
is with the Highland Light Infantry a Karepark Camp, Curragh,
Ireland, and Pte. Frederick Payne is with the T.R.B. at Cramlington,
Northumberland. Before enlisting, the late Pte. J. T. Payne
was in the employ of Messrs. W. and C. Wills, boot and shoe
manufacturers, Trinity Lane.

at sea when the bow of Mourne was hit by a GNAT torpedo fired by
German submarine U-767, causing an ignition in the ship magazine

husband of Beatrice Irene Moloney, of Grafton, Warwickshire. In
the 1921 census he was the son of John and Harriett Moloney, aged
