LINCOLN ST MARY MAGDELENE WAR MEMORIAL

This memorial resides in St Mary Magadelene Church Lincoln. The three names are all on the main Lincoln War Memorial. On a built-up wooden memorial, with a crucified Christ, in painted lettering on the insides of the doors which close over it, on the north wall of the nave. the triptych made of teak wood from H.M.S. "Britannia" was unveiled on Sunday 9th January 1921 (see Lincolnshire Chronicle 15th January 1921). The Lincolnshire Chronicle 26th February 1921 records the following 'To provide and place a memorial shine on the north wall of the nave of the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, in memory of the parishioners who lost their lives in the Great War. The said memorial is to be a bronze figure of our Lord on the cross in the centre and underneath the date 1914 – 1918, with the names of those who have fallen on one panel under the words "Roll of Honour" and on the other panel the inscription "Their name liveth for evermore".'

ANDERTON	James	Lance Corporal 14527, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 16th June 1915. Aged 20. Born St Mary Magdelene, Lincoln, enlisted Lincoln. Son of James William and Caroline Anderton, of 2, Bedford Court, Lincoln. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21. THOMPSON	John Reginald	Private 2388, 1st/4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 13th October 1915. Aged 19. Enlisted Luton, Bedfordshire, resident Lincoln. Son of John Edward and Florence Thompson, of 77, Bailgate, Lincoln. No known grave. Commemorated on LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 31 to 34. See also Lincoln Memorial.
WILSON	Cecil Roy	[Memorial lists him as Sergeant]Corproal C/12641, 21st Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action 22nd July 1916. Born Skegness, enlisted Lincoln, resident Scarborough. Buried in BERKS CEMETERY EXTENSION, Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium. Plot I. Row G. Grave 20. See also Lincoln Memorial.
