Ordinary Signalman, C/JX214162, HMS "Walney", Royal Navy. Killed 8th November 1942 in Oran Harbour during the opening hours of 'Operation Torch'. Aged 26. Son of William and Sarah Saunders; husband of Joan Lesley Ward of Henley-on-Thames. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Column 58, Panel 3. Note: HMS Walney was a 2,000 ton Gun Boat (ex US Coastguard Cutter, USS Seabago). She was built in 1930 and transferred to Britain for the war effort on 12th May 1941. She immediately saw action in the Atlantic, between 1941 and 1942, where she won the Atlantic Battle Honour. Walney was sunk with heavy loss of life in one of the most hazardous naval operations of the war; the assault on ORAN harbour during Operation TORCH on 8th November 1942. Walney and her sister ship Hartland were carrying Commandos and American shock troops whose task was to capture the harbour. Led by Walney, the force breached the harbour defensive boom and landed the assault troops in the face of point blank fire from shore batteries, a destroyer and a cruiser. Both ships were sunk with very heavy loss of life, but not before Walney had sunk the enemy destroyer. |
