ACOMB MEMORIAL UNVEILED.

The Acomb war memorial, stone cross on hexagonal plinth, was unveiled yesterday afternoon, in the presence of about seven thousand residents of this York suburb. A procession, headed by the band of the 5th West Yorkshire Regiment, with guard of honour of ex-service men, and including members of all the public bodies and friendly societies, marched from the Adult School to the green, where service was held.

An addreso was given by the Rev. W. Barton, Primitive Methodist Minister, and after a Lesson by the Vicar and prayerby the Rev. W. Noble, Wesleyan minister, the hymn “For all the Saints” was sung. Dr. F. Fairburn Armytage, chairman of the Memorial Committee, unveiled the memorial, and in a brief address said that the sacrifice of the 77 men whose names were recorded on the hexagon, and who had laid down their lives, would not be in vain, if, by their sacrifice, future generations were spared the awful misery and anxiety, and suffering through which our country passed during the war.

A period of silence followed, and the flag on the new village flagstaff was then hoised half-mast, and the band played a funeral march. A volley by the firing party was followed by the sounding of “The Last Post.” A public wreath was placed at the base of the memorial by Mrs. J. Bainbridge, and wreaths were also deposited from Aciomb Parish Church, the Wesleyans and Primitive Methodist Churches, the working-men's club, and the schools. After the singing of a hymn, the Benediction was pronounced by the Rev. R. P. T. Tennent, vicar of Acomb.
