HAUXTON WAR MEMORIAL

Hauxton War Memorial stands in the grounds of St Edmund's Church and was unveiled in 1922. The cross is a wheel cross on a tapering shaft atop a stone plinth. There are five names listed for World War 1 and two for World War 2.

1914-1919
KELLY	Edward Lenord John	Battery Quartermaster Sergeant 786, N (A.A.) Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. Died Tuesday, 22nd April 1919. In 1891 he was the son of John and Annie Kelly, aged 5, Scholar, born 1886 in India, residen Shelford Road, Hauxton. Buried in ST EDMUND CHURCHYARD, HAUXTON, Cambridgeshire. Near South-West corner of Church.
MEAD	Henry aka Harry	Acting Sergeant 5755, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment who was killed in action on Friday, 1st October 1915. Aged 32. Born Chittering, Cambridgeshire, enlisted Cambridge. Husband of Florence Molton (formerly Mead), of Half Acre Farm, Barmay, Ely, Cambs. No known grave. Commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21
MEAD	Thomas Charles	Private 55788 97th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) who was killed in action on Saturday, 18th November 1916. Aged 21. Born and resident Hauxton, enlisted Cambridge. Son of Thomas and Lavina Mead, of High St., Hauxton, Cambs. Formerly 31037, Essex Regiment. Buried in WAGGON ROAD CEMETERY, BEAUMONT-HAMEL, Somme, France. Plot/Row/Section D. Grave 32.
PLUCK	Arthur	Private 26662 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment who died of wounds on Monday, 30th April 1917. Aged 34. Born Hinxton, enlisted Cambridge. Son of Mr. A. Pluck, of Cement Cottages, Hauxton, Cambridge. Buried in DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, ETRUN, Pas de Calais, France. Plot III. Row H. Grave 41.
SAMUEL	Vernon Ames	Private 20145, 2nd Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers who died in the United Kingdom on Friday, 19th July 1918. Aged 24. Enlisted Ely, resident Hauxton. Son of Mrs. Samuel, of High Sheer, Hauxton. Buried in ST EDMUND CHURCHYARD, HAUXTON, Cambridgeshire. East of Church. [Listed as Vernon James on SDGW]

AYRES	Geoffrey Herbert	Lieutenant 308316, 15th Light A.A. Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died 9th May 1945, Aged 31. Son of Herbert George and Alice Kate Ayres; husband of Kathleen May Ayres, of Foxton, Hertfordshire. Buried in HAMBURG CEMETERY, Hamburg, Germany. Plot 2A. Row M. Grave 1.
AYRES	Ronald Keith	Sergeant 1181631, 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on Wednesday, 29th April 1942. Aged 21. Son of Herbert George and Alice Kate Ayres; husband of Clara Florence Ayres, of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Allied. Buried in AABENRAA CEMETERY, Denmark. Military Plot. Row 1. Grave 9.
