HATHERSAGE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information

The memorial can be found at the southern end of the road on the eastern side in Stanage Hall, Oddfellows Road, Hathersage, Derbyshire Dales. It takes the form of a stone and tile community and social hall with two stained glass windows, one with a trefoil top the other arched, that carry the names of the dead; between them is a stone tablet which carries the World War 1 commemoration. There are 24 names listed for World War 1 and 23 names for World War 2. The memorial hall was first opened 19 October 1929 by Mrs Shuttleworth. There is a further memorial withinSt Michael and All Angels Church, Church Bank, Hathersage.

A HARROGATE BRIDE.

Yesterday afternoon, at St. Wilfrid's Church, Harrogate, the marriage took place of Mr. Thomas Hardy McCall, son of Mr. Hardy Bertram McCall, F.S.A., of Holme Lea, Ilkley. and Miss Kathleen Grace Will, eldest daughter of Mr. George Will, of Oakbrae, Harrogate. The officiating clergy were the Rev. P. Day, uncle of the bridegroom, and vicar of Lasting- ham. and the Dev. D. M. M. Bartlett, vicar of St. Wilfrid's. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of white charmeuse, with lace veil. Her ornaments included a string of pears. and she tarried a bouqet of lilies, the gifts of the bridegroom. Her only bridesmaid was Miss Betty Will, her sister. Her gold brooch and bouquet of pink tulips were the gifts of the bridegroom. Mr. Brian McCall, brother of the bridegroom, was the beet man. Mr. F. Hemsley, organist, played the wedding music.

Squadron Leader (Pilot) 33548, 21 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Bomber Command. Died of wounds received when flying out of Watton, Norfolk, in a Bristol Blenheim IV, serial number Z7447, when the aircraft crashed off the Dutch coast during a low-level raid on shipping at Rotterdam, rescued but died in Wilhelmina Hosptial, Amsterdam, soon after, 28 August 1941. Aged 21. Son of Ashton Ashton Shuttleworth and Dorothy Ann Shuttleworth; husband of Honor Muriel Shuttleworth (nee Ramsay). In the 1921 census he was the son of Ashton Ashton [sic] and Dorothy Ann Shuttleworth, aged 1, born Sheffield, Yorkshire, resident Nether Hall, Hathersage, Derbyshire. Previously reported missing after operations, Squadron-Leader Richard Ashton Shuttieworth died on active service within a few weeks of his marriage, it is announced to-day.

On August 16th he married Miss Honor Muriel Ramsay, of Old Holywood-road, Belfast.

In the following month he was buried in Amsterdam.

He was the younger son of Major and Mrs. A. A. Shuttleworth, of Hathersage, Derbyshire.

SNOWDON John Nevil

Sub-Lieutenant, H.M.M.T.B. 622, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died at sea when his vessel was attacked and sunk by an enemy destroyer just off the coast of the Netherlands 10 March 1943. Born 3 September 1921. In the 1939 Register he was the son of Harry and Rose Snowdon, single, born 3 September 1921, a Retail Fruit & Vegetable Distribution (Manager), resident 400 Brincliffe Edge Road, Sheffield, Sheffield C.B., Yorkshire (West Riding). No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 80, Column 1.

Killed in action flying out of Dishforth, Yorkshire, in an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V, serial number Z6663, when the aircraft crashed into high ground at Bank Foot near Ingleby Greenhow, Yorks off track in poor visibility when returning from a raid on Dortmund 9 June 1941. Aged 21. Born 29 November 1919. Native of Hathersage, Derbyshire. Son of John and Mary H. Stubbs, of Hathersage. In the 1921 census he was the son of John and Mary Hannah Stubbs, aged 1, born Hathersage, Derbyshire, resident Hathersage, Derbyshire. In the 1939 Register he was the son of John and Mary Hannah Stubbs, born 29 November 1919, a Steelworks Chemist, single, resident 19, Council House, Mill Lane, Hathersage, Bakewell R.D., Derbyshire.
