EVERETT, Charles William
Private, No 24201, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)

Born at Stanway, near Colchester, Private Everett was the third son of Mr H.Everett of Staion Road, Southend On Sea, and lived at Barling. He was employed as a gardener until his enlistment in the 15th Kings Royal Rifle Corps (No R/10609) in January 1915. He went to France in July 1917where he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.

In the following September he was wounded in the head and invalided to England. He returned to France 4th April.1918 and was seriously wounded thirteen days later. He was again invalided home, dying of his wounds in hospital at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 26th April.1918. He was 27 years old. He is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial.

Gunner Haken was a native of Barling, who was killed in action in France on the 27th July, 1917. He is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial.

HIMPETT, William Edward - Private, No 204480, 7th Bedfordshire Regiment

Private Himpett lived in Thundersley and was the son of Mrs. Himpett of 8, Albert Road, Southend-on-Sea. He was born at Sittingbourne in Kent and enlisted in Southend in January 1917. He was reprted missing, and was later confirmed to have died of wounds in France on 22nd March 1918, aged 32. His name appears on the Barling War Memorial

LANGSTONE, Stanley - Air Mechanic, No 112904, Recruits Depot, Royal Flying Corps

Stanley Langstone was the son of Mr & Mrs Frederick Langstone, of Holts Farm, Barling. He enlisted on the 27th December 1917 and immediately developed a cold which developed into pneumonia, resulting in his death at Woking Military Hospital on 13th January 1918 aged 24. He left a widow, Elsie. He is buried in Barling churchyard beneath a marble cross, the inscription reading:

LINGE, Herbert, A.B., Royal Navy

Herbert Linge came from Barling, and was serving in the Navy at the outbreak. He lost his life at the Battle of Jutland on 31st May 1916, when his ship, H.M.S. Queen Mary was sunk. He was 22 years old and is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial.

MURRELL, Bertram George - Private, No 82763, Royal Fusiliers, posted to 2/2 London Regiment

Private Murrell lived at Southend and initially enlisted in the 12th Middlesex Regiment (No 5689) in September 1915. He was taken prisoner on 24th August 1918, dying of dysentry about the middle of July (31st) aged 22. He was buried at Misery near Chaulnes, behind enemy lines. He is commemorated on the Barling and St.Erkenwalds War Memorials.

Note: This is as published, the real dates are hard to fathom although his date of death was 31st July.

Born at Little Wakering, Private Perry lived at Barling, and enlisted at Southend in February 1916. He was killed in action in France on 4th March 1917 aged 29, and was buried at Miraumont. He was the first Barling man to be killed. One brother was serving in France and another was still in training. He is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial.

SMITH, George Joseph - Private, No 40404, 1/5th Lancashire Fusiliers

Private Smith lived at Pantile Cottages, Barling, and joined the Army on the 6th September 1917, initially serving in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment(No 39803). He had only been abroad for three months when he was killed in action at Ypres on 6th September 1917, aged 25. He left a Mother and twin sister. His name appears on the Barling War Memorial.

Son of George and Jane Snow, of Barling; husband of Constance Minnie Snow, of The Falklands, Barling, Southend-on-Sea. Formerly M/272694, Army Service Corps (Motor Transport). Buried on the South side of the main path in ALL SAINTS CHURCHYARD, BARLING, Essex.

SNOW, Arthur Ernest - Private, No 40132, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment.

Private Snow was born at Barling, the son of Mrs.Snow of Barling Post Office. After attending the village school he was employed for twelve years by father-in-law Mr.W.T.Meekings of Queens Road, Southend as a potato salesman, being described by him as "One of the best men in the work". He enlisted in the Army Service Corps (MT) (No M/272694) at Grove Park in November 1916, and died of blood poisoning due to wounds received in France at Southampton on 14th April 1918, aged 29. He left a widow and two children at The Falklands, Barling. He was buried in Barling churchyard, and is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial. His brother Ernest was lost at Jutland on 31st May 1916.

Ernest Snow was the son the late George Snow and Mrs.j.Snow, postmistress of Barling. He fought in the Battle of the Falklands Islands and was lost on H.M.S.Invincible at Jutland on 31st May 1916 aged 21.
