| EVERETT | Charles William | [Spelt EVERITT on CWGC] Private 24201, 35th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died of wounds 26th April 1918 in France & Flanders. Age27. Born Stanway, Essex, enlisted Southend-on-Sea. Son of Mr. H. Everitt, of West St., South Ockendon, Essex. Formerly R/10609, King's Royal Rifle Corps. Buried in LODGE HILL CEMETERY, BIRMINGHAM, West Midlands. Grave B10 6. 481C. Southend Standard Newspaper, Obiturary, 9-5-1918 EVERETT,
Charles William Born at Stanway, near Colchester, Private Everett was the third son of Mr H.Everett of Staion Road, Southend On Sea, and lived at Barling. He was employed as a gardener until his enlistment in the 15th Kings Royal Rifle Corps (No R/10609) in January 1915. He went to France in July 1917where he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. In the following September he was wounded in the head and invalided to England. He returned to France 4th April.1918 and was seriously wounded thirteen days later. He was again invalided home, dying of his wounds in hospital at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 26th April.1918. He was 27 years old. He is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial. |

Born Boxford, Essex, enlisted Cardiff. Son of William Haken, of Barling, Southend-on-Sea. Buried in COXYDE MILITARY CEMETERY, Koksijde, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave I. F. 18. Haken was a native of Barling, who was killed in action in France
on the 27th July, 1917. He is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial. |
| HIMPETT | William [Edward] | Private 204480, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 22nd March 1918 in France & Flanders. Age 31. Born Sittingbourne, Kent, enlisted Southend-on-Sea, resident Thundersley, Essex. Son of Mrs. A. Himpett, of 7, Poole's Lane, Hull Bridge, Hockley, Essex; husband of L. Westhorp (formerly Himpett), of 8, Albert Square, Southend-on-Sea. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 28 and 29. Southend Standard, 23/1/1918, with an appeal for information. Himpett lived in Thundersley and was the son of Mrs. Himpett of
8, Albert Road, Southend-on-Sea. He was born at Sittingbourne in
Kent and enlisted in Southend in January 1917. He was reprted missing,
and was later confirmed to have died of wounds in France on 22nd
March 1918, aged 32. His name appears on the Barling War Memorial |
| LANGSTONE | Stanley |
Southend Standard, Obiturary, 24-1-1918 LANGSTONE, Stanley - Air Mechanic, No 112904, Recruits Depot, Royal Flying Corps Stanley Langstone was the son of Mr & Mrs Frederick Langstone, of Holts Farm, Barling. He enlisted on the 27th December 1917 and immediately developed a cold which developed into pneumonia, resulting in his death at Woking Military Hospital on 13th January 1918 aged 24. He left a widow, Elsie. He is buried in Barling churchyard beneath a marble cross, the inscription reading:

| LINGE | Herbert | Able Seaman J/7597, H.M.S. Queen Mary, Royal Navy. Died 31st May 1916. Age 22. Son of John and Elizabeth Linge, of Barling, Essex. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 13. Southend Standard, Obiturary, 15/6/1916 LINGE, Herbert, A.B., Royal Navy Herbert Linge came from Barling, and was serving in the Navy at the outbreak. He lost his life at the Battle of Jutland on 31st May 1916, when his ship, H.M.S. Queen Mary was sunk. He was 22 years old and is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial. |
| MURRELL | Bert[ram George] | Private 82763, posted to 2nd/2nd London Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Died 31st July 1918 in France & Flanders. Age 22. Enlisted West Ham, resident Barking, Essex. Formerly 5689, 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Son of George and Annie Murrell, of 192, York Road, Southend-on-Sea. Buried in HEATH CEMETERY, HARBONNIERES, Somme, France. Grave VIII. I. 6. Southend Standard, 23/1/1919, with an appeal for information MURRELL, Bertram George - Private, No 82763, Royal Fusiliers, posted to 2/2 London Regiment Private Murrell lived at Southend and initially enlisted in the 12th Middlesex Regiment (No 5689) in September 1915. He was taken prisoner on 24th August 1918, dying of dysentry about the middle of July (31st) aged 22. He was buried at Misery near Chaulnes, behind enemy lines. He is commemorated on the Barling and St.Erkenwalds War Memorials. Note: This is as published, the real dates are hard to fathom although his date of death was 31st July. |
| PERRY | George | Private 26778, 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 4th March 1917 in France & Flanders. Age 28. Born Little Wakering, Essex, enlisted Southend-on-Sea, resident Barling. Son of James Perry, of Barling, Southend-on-Sea. Buried in REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY, GRANDCOURT, Somme, France. Grave IV. D. II. Southend Standard 22/3/1917 & 29/3/1917 PERRY, George- Private, No 26778, 10th Essex Regiment Born at Little Wakering, Private Perry lived at Barling, and enlisted at Southend in February 1916. He was killed in action in France on 4th March 1917 aged 29, and was buried at Miraumont. He was the first Barling man to be killed. One brother was serving in France and another was still in training. He is commemorated on the Barling War Memorial. |

| SMITH | Joseph George | Private 40404, 1st/5th Battalion (Territorial Force), Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action 6th September 1917 in France & Flanders. Age 25. Born Wakering, Essex, enlisted Southend. Son of Mrs. S. C. Smith, of Pantile Cottages, Barling, Southend-on-Sea. Formerly 39803, Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. Buried in TYNE COT CEMETERY, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave X. B. 7. Southend Standard 10/1/1918 SMITH, George Joseph - Private, No 40404, 1/5th Lancashire Fusiliers Private Smith lived at Pantile Cottages, Barling, and joined the Army on the 6th September 1917, initially serving in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment(No 39803). He had only been abroad for three months when he was killed in action at Ypres on 6th September 1917, aged 25. He left a Mother and twin sister. His name appears on the Barling War Memorial. Note: The paper gives the date of enlistment and date of death as the same, the enlistment date is wrong. |
| SNOW | Arthur Herbert |
Southend Standard, obituary 18/4/1918 SNOW, Arthur Ernest - Private, No 40132, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment.
Private Snow was born at Barling, the son of Mrs.Snow of Barling
Post Office. After attending the village school he was employed
for twelve years by father-in-law Mr.W.T.Meekings of Queens
Road, Southend as a potato salesman, being described by him
as "One of the best men in the work". He enlisted
in the Army Service Corps (MT) (No M/272694) at Grove Park
in November 1916, and died of blood poisoning due to wounds
received in France at Southampton on 14th April 1918, aged
29. He left a widow and two children at The Falklands, Barling.
He was buried in Barling churchyard, and is commemorated on
the Barling War Memorial. His brother Ernest was lost at Jutland
on 31st May 1916. |

Snow was the son the late George Snow and Mrs.j.Snow, postmistress
of Barling. He fought in the Battle of the Falklands Islands and
was lost on H.M.S.Invincible at Jutland on 31st May 1916 aged 21.
