The South African (Boer) War memorial is to be found within St. Peter's Church, Berkhamstead. It takes the form of a marble plaque with pointed top with the inscription in relief in the centre of the plaque.It lists six names of men who perished during the South African War 1899-1901 although the date extends to 1902.

PINNER	Frankcombe	Lance Serjeant 678, Army Pay Corps. Died of disease at Pretoria 25th April 1901. In the 1891 census he is the son of Charles and Annie S Pinner, aged 14, a scholar, born Paddington, Middlesex, resident High Street, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire.
PAVITT	Abraham	[Also listed as PAVETT] Serjeant 4027, 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. Died of disease at Heilbron 18th November 1901. Aged 27. In the 1891 census he is listed as Abraham Pavett, son of Abraham and Ann I Pavett, aged 17, General Labourer, born Ireland, resident Charles Street, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire.
CAPELL	Thomas	Private 3112, 2nd Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Wounded at Colenso 15 December 1899, died of those wound 18 December 1899.
CHILTON	Leonard	Private 2116, 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own). Killed in action at Monte Cristo 18th February 1900. Enlisted aged 23 years 2 months. Born Berkhamstead. Trade before enlistment Grocer's Assistant. Attested and passed fit 19 February 1892 in St Georges Barracks, London. Height 5 feet 5¾ inches, girth 33 inches, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, wiehgt 128 lbs, religious denomination Church of England. Son of Henry Chiltonm of 17 High Street, Chesham, Bucks.
BONE	Arthur	Lance Corporal [Private on memorial] 3066, 4th Battalion (Herts Militia), Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of enteric fever at Mafeking 13th December 1900. Born circa 1875 in Great Berkhamstead. Attested in Dublin 19 February 1900, aged 25 years 1 month, resident 34 Highfield Road, Gt. Berkhamsted. Son of Lucy Bone of 34 Highfield Road, Gt. Berkhamstead. Prior to enlistment he was a Labourer. Unmarried. Previously attested 26 February 1895 in Berkhamstead, passed fit 11 March 1895, aged 20 years 2 months, height 5 feet 6½ inches, chest 36 inches, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. In the 1891 census he is aged 16, son of Lucy Bone (a widow), a Chemical Labourer, born Berkhamstead, resident Highfield Road, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire. In the 1881 census he is the son of John and Lucy Bone, aged 6, a Scholar, born Berkhamstead, resident George Street, Northchurch aka Berkhampstead St Mary, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire.
NORWOOD	A	Private 2890, 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died of disease at Pretoria 11th February 1901 either Alfred Norwood, in the 1891 census he was aged 25, son of James and Sarah Norwood, Shoemaker, born Berkhamstead, resident Ravens Lane, Berkhampstead. or Arthur Norwood, in the 1891 census he is aged 18, son of Thomas and MAry Norwood, General Labourer, born Paddington, Middlesex, resident George Street, Northchurch or Berkhamsted, Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire.
