Killed when a single torpedo was fired by the German submarine U-27, and the detonation followed shortly after, and E3 sank immediately, 18 October 1914. Aged 26. LIEUT.-COLONEL POINGDESTRE.

The death occurred suddenly on Thursday of Lieut.-Col. A. Poingdestre, commanding the 2nd Royal Militia of Jersey. Educated at Victoria College, the late officer entered the army in 1882, and after serving in the South Staffordshire and the Suffolk Regt. he joined the Indian Staff Corps in 1807. He commanded the 44th Merwara Infantry, Indian Army, and was appointed to the Jersey Militia three years ago. Col. Poingdestre saw service in the Egyptian expedition of 1882, and received the medal and bronze star.

DEATH OF COL. POINGDESTRE.

The Jersey “Morning News” announces the death of Lient.-Colonel A. Poingdestre, commanding the 2nd. Bn. Royal Jersey Militia, which occurred yesterday morning at his residence, Havro-des-Pas. The cause of death was double pneumonia, following a chill. The deceased officer, who was 54, after serving a term in the Jersey Militia, joined the South Staffords, and was promoted Lieutenant in 1882. The following year he was transferred to the Suffolk Regiment. Subsequently he was attached to the Indian Army, where he passed through the stages to Lieut.-Colonel, remaining in India until 1912, and on Februsry of the followign, year he suceeeded the late Lient.-Col. R. F. Lindsell, C. B., as Commanding Officer of the East Battalion R.M.L.J.
