Louis
was a 2nd Lieut. with the RAF. He had been born January 13, 1899
at Jaunpore, India. Sometime between then and 1917 he moved to "Beechleigh",
Bishops Down, Tunbridge Wells. He gained his pilot’s license at
the Grahame-White School, Hendon on August 22, 1917 and joined the
65 Squadron as a pilot on September 13, 1917. The 65th began as
a Training Squadron but as early as July 1917 they were sent to
France as an operational squadron. Louis was last reported seen
in his Sopwith Camel during aerial combat over Becelaere-Daclozele
near Passchendale. He did not return to base that day (November
23rd, 1917) and was posted missing in action. He was not confirmed
as killed until March 15, 1918 on the evidence of a message dropped
from a German plane stating that "this officer was dead".
He is remembered at the Rusthall War Memorial and at the Arras Flying
Services Memorial. He is also commemorated on a brass plaque and
stained glass window within St Paul’s Church in Rusthall. |
