FORMBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information

The Formby War memorial can be found at the junction of Three Tuns Lane and School Lane, Formby, Merseyside. It takes the form of a wheel cross with rough hewn design on the shaft of the cross; the cross stands on a plinth with a two stepped base; the inscrption is in black letting on the plinth. Behind the World War 1 memorial is a concave wall the centre piece of which is three panels, the outer two panels contain names for those who fell in World War 2 and the centre panel contains the inscription. There are 113 names plus two at the base for World War 1, 69 names for World War 2 and one for Afghanistan. The World War 1 memorial design was carried out by J. F. Keely and Sons, monumental sculptors, Birkdale, and it was unveiled by Lt. Col. John Formby, D.L., J.P., O.B.E., 12 November 1922. Note that some names on the 1914 - 1918 memorial are now weathered and difficult to read.
