Illegitimate son of Ann Hughes, widow of William Dixon. She died shortly after giving birth of puerperal fever, aged 43, leaving Reuben as an orphan. His half sister, Hannah Mary Dixon, is the Hannah Mary Hopley listed on below as the mother of Alf, Charles and Richard Hopley, all commemorated on the memorial; she was chair of the Council when the memorial was unveiled in April 1923 and she lay a wreath; She had eight sons fighting in World War 1, one of whom fought for the Canadian Forces. Reuben was a professional soldier who enlisted as a young boy; he left his war gratuity to Hannah Mary Hopley. He was previously admitted to 31 Ambulance Train suffering from Trench Fever 7 May 1917 at Bray and detrained at Rouen the same day, no fgurther particulars can be found. In the 1891 census Reuben is living with his half brother Walter Dixon in the Broughton Workhouse in Hawarden in North Wales. By the 1901 he is living in Army Barracks at Charlton, listed as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. Buried in WHITE HOUSE CEMETERY, ST. JEAN-LES-YPRES, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row GG. Grave 10. |
