FIRSBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

This memorial is badly eroded and need of some repair. It stands in the parish grvyard and takes the formof a two stepped, square base, with a square plint mounted on it and a long tapering shaft with simple cross mounted on that. The name slisted are for World War 1 only. Note: As this memorial is slightly eroded and covered in part by vegetation the inscription may possibly be incorrect.

CHAPMAN	Fred	Sapper 210278. 2nd Railway Tel Company, Royal Engineers. Died 2nd March 1919, aged 26 years. Son of (the late) A H and S G Chapman of Rose Cottage, Firsby, Lincs. Commemorated Firsby (St Andrew) Churchyard.
CLARK	C or G	Royal Army Service Corps on memorial. Possibly George Clark born Firsby c1894, present Firsby 1901 with Grandparents John and Mary A Clark, no further information currently.
RESPONDED TO THEIR COUNTRYS CALL GOOD MEN AND TRUE THEY GAVE THEIR ALL KILLED IN ACTION
CHAPMAN	A ?	Grenadier Guards on memorial. Possibly Arthur Horman Chapman. Private 13388. 4th Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Killed in action 12th September 1916. Born Lincoln, Lincs. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 8D.
CASEY	W E	Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on memorial but unable to identify and no further information currently.
MYERS	A	Machine Gun Corps on memorial. Possibly Alexander Myers. Private 71097. 54th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 11360 Middlesex Regiment. Killed in action 3rd May 1917. Born Lincoln, Lincs and enlisted Walthamstow, Ess. Commemorated Arrras Memorial. Bay 10.
TROWSDALE	Percy Robert	Sergeant 7973. 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 3rd December 1914, aged 34 years. Son of Thomas and Nellie Trowsdale of Firsby Station, Lincs. Born Great Steeping (as CWGC) or Firsby (as SDGW), enlisted Spilsby and resident Firsby, Lincs. Commemorated Estaires Communal Cemetery and Extension. I.A.3.
Known Firsby connection – NOT on memorial.
CROUTER	Arthur	Bombardier 508. 1st (North Midland) Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 2nd September 1915, aged 24 years. Son of Edward and Eliza Crouter of 29 Wild Street, Derby, Dby. Born Firsby, Lincs and enlisted Derby, Dby. Commemorated Railways Dugouts Burial Ground. I.F.9.
PORTAS	Harry	Private 43119. 10th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 1048 East Yorkshire Regiment. Died of wounds 25th August 1918. Husband of F M Robinson (formerly Portas) of 69 Leonard Street, Hull, Yks. Born Firsby, Lincs and enlisted Hull, Yks. Commemorated St Pierre Cemetery. VIII.G.4.
SIMPSON	Archibald Kitson	Private 32120. 5th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Killed in action 8th October 1918. Born Firsby, Lincs, enlisted Preston and resident Accrington, Lan. Commemorated Cambrai East Military Cemetery. VI.A.25.
