MARTON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is to be found in the grounds of St Margaret's Church, Marton. It takes the form of Celctic Cross on atapered shaft mounted on a plinth, the whole standing on a three-stepped base. The inscriptions are affixed to the plinth on two msides in the form of white, marble, tablets. The memorial was unveiled on 1st August 1921. The base stone and shaft of the cross apparently date back to the 7th century when it stood in the market place before being moved to the church. The ex-servicemen then restored it and moved it to a more predominant position as a war memorial.

DIXON	Charles Edward	Private 31811. 3rd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died at home 14th April 1917, aged 19 years. Son of Joseph and Mary Dixon of Marton, Lincs. Born Marton, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Marton, Lincs. Commemorated MARTON CEMETERY. 32.
GRAHAM	Robert W	Unable to identify CWGC/SDGW. No further information currently
HUTCHINSON	John	Private 241687. 5th Battalion, West Riding Regiment. Killed in action 30th May 1917, aged 34 years. Son of Henry and Mary Hutchinson of Trent Port, Marton, Lincs. Born Sutton on Trent, Notts, enlisted Lincoln and resident Marton, Lincs. Commemorated TOURNAI COMMUNAL CEMETERY ALLIED EXTENSION. V.H.13.
MEADOWS	Samuel James	Private 15825. 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 3rd July 1916. Born Ramsey, Hunts, enlisted Lincoln and resident Marton, Lincs. Commemorated THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. Pier and Face 1C.
