In the 1901 census he was aged 10, born Ashby, Lincolnshire, son of George A and Elizabeth E Varah, resident High Street, Ashby, Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 20, born Ashby, Lincolnshire, a Shop Assistant, son of George Albert and Elizabeth Ellen Varah, resident 5 Mill Road, Ashby, Lincolnshire. Married Dorothy Annie Cousen at Bottesford, Lincolnshire 9 October 1916. In the London Gazette 1 December 1916, issue 29847, he is mentioned as a Second Lieutenant, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Lieut. George Varah, Loyal North Regiment, the only son Mr. G. H. Varah, of Endcliffe House, is reported by the War Office to have been missing since April 11 or 12. He was educated at St. Cuthbert's College, Worksop.
