In the 1891 census he was newborn, born Ashby, Lincolnshire, son of George A and Elizabeth E Varah, resident High Street, Ashby, Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 10, born Ashby, Lincolnshire, son of George A and Elizabeth E Varah, resident High Street, Ashby, Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 20, born Ashby, Lincolnshire, a Shop Assistant, son of George Albert and Elizabeth Ellen Varah, resident 5 Mill Road, Ashby, Lincolnshire. Married Dorothy Annie Cousen at Bottesford, Lincolnshire 9 October 1916. In the London Gazette 1 December 1916, issue 29847, he is mentioned as a Second Lieutenant, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
