War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The
Spalding War Memorial to those killed in the First World War stands
in the gardens of the important medieval building on Churchgate, called
Ayscoughfee Hall, overlooking the ornamental lake and the extensive
gardens, the memorial is in the form of open fronted, and sided, building
with the roll of honour on the stone rear wall was designed by Sir
Edwin Lutyens, famous for his design of the Cenotaph in London. Sir
Edwin is said to have visited the gardens and chose the site for the
war memorial. Among those remembered is Francis Walter Stafford McLaren,
who was Member of Parliament for the Spalding Division from 1910 until
his death in 1917. The dedication is separated from the roll of honour
by two carved and painted stone flags. The memorial does not include
a roll of honour for those killed in the Second World War - this roll
of honour is in the neighbouring St Mary and St Nicolas Church. There
is an additional memorial stone with dedication to those who gave
their lives in both wars. There are 249 names on the memorial plus
the lone additional stone.
As
this memorial was being researched it became evident that there was
no definitive reason why a name was included or excluded. There were
many men who were born or resident in Splading not included. As you
will see below there were two brothers, one included and one not.
Interestingly a lot of the names listed here enlisted in Luton. These
men initially enlisted into the 4th Lincolns, the battalion having
decided on 4th August 1914 that volunteers would only be enlisted
at Lincoln. Thus many lads decided to hold off enlisting until later.
On 28th August 1914, men from the outlying towns of the county (Spalding,
Stamford, Grantham, etc) who wanted to enlist were encouraged to travel
down to Luton, where the battalion was now based to enlist. [Information

a number of civil and cantonment cemeteries scattered through the
north of Pakistan and the tribal areas, where their permanent maintenance
was not possible. The imposing entrance of honey-coloured stone,
quarried at Jungshai, near Hyderabad, is one part of a dual memorial
the other part being in Delhi, to 25,000 men of the army and air
forces of undivided India who died during the 1939-1945 War while
on service in nonoperational zones. The cemeteries in which they
