of the oldest ships in the Royal Navy at the outbreak of World

some 60 miles off the coast of Scotland, she was struck by a torpedo
fired from German submarine U.9. and sunk almost immediately.

                  John's Daily Star,
10 February 1916: NFLD, SOLDIER DID PLUCKY ACT Four
Of Them Went Out Into No-Man's Land Took Identification Discs
From Dead Comrade And Buried His Body - Were Complimented For
                  Coolness Under Fire “The
two chief pests out here are the flies by day and the vermin
by night” writes Corporal C. F. Garland, of the 1st Newfoundland
Regiment, from the Dardanelles, in a letter published in the
Montreal Herald. “Our men were complimented for their
coolness under fire. When we were up in the trenches we used
to have listening patrols, covering parties and men working
in the front of our trenches every night. You could hear ‘Johnny
Turk’ talking quite plain. Johnny has geese, hens and
dogs in his trenches and when the dogs are not howling the geese
and hens arc kicking up a noise at night. Evidently Mr Turk
fares sumptuously by way of bill of fare.” “It's
quite cold out here in the night time and, some days also the
people of Newfoundland won't be astray if they send out some
winter clothing, such as top shirts, socks and underclothing.
It is a hard place out here to get anything new, and the most
of us have on the same clothing that we landed in a month ago.
We left our kit bags with all our clothing etc., on the beach
when we landed and we haven't been able to get down to them
                  since.” “When
we were up in the trenches I saw four of our chaps do a plucky
thing. There was a dead soldier out in front of our trench who
was killed a month or more ago. The four chaps crawled out in
the daytime and dug a hole and buried him. They took his identification
disc and pay book, etc., off him. He turned out to be a Sergeant
Goulden of the Norfolks. The men made a plain wooden cross with
his name, etc!. on it and placed it over the grave of the dead
                  hero.” |

 "Alan
Denis Bond was born and bred in Aylsham, Norfolk and was
educated at the Paston Grammar School, North Walsham.
He had an elder brother, Ray, who was a Quarter Master
Sergeant in the Army during the War and upon his return
worked for Barclays Bank. Sadly, Ray died in 1956. Alan
was married to Joyce, they had no children, she remarried
and died about 20 years ago. Alan was a keen player of
both golf and tennis. Before the War Alan Bond worked
with his Father, who had a thriving Gentlemen's and Ladies
Outfitters (clothing) business in Aylsham. Alan then purchased
shops in North Walsham and Swaffham, both market towns
in Norfolk Here he carried on the same business as his
Father His wife, Joyce, looked after both shops during
the war and continued to do so after Alan was killed The
North Walsham shop continued trading for about 30 years
and the Swaffham shop for about 15 years after the war
I was only 10 years old when the war started therefore
my memories of Alan are limited Alan Denis Bond was my
                        cousin."
                      With
best wishes, Molly Postle - Aylsham - 18 July 2007
