H.M.S. Aboukir was part of an ill-fated patrol of old Cressy class armoured cruisers in the North Sea. On 22 September 1914, the patrol was sighted by German submarine U9. U9 fired a single torpedo at Aboukir at about 6.25am, which struck her on the port side. Aboukir rapidly flooded and orders were given to abandon ship. Two other ships were also sunk by U9 within two hours. In total, 837 were rescued, but 1459 died.
