Gallipoli. Killed in action on Gallipoli 5th June 1915. Aged 32.
Born 26 April 1883. Son of Mr & Mrs J. T. Evans of Gisborne, New
Zealand. Husband of Constance Evans of 16, Blenheim Park Road, South
Croydon; she was the daughter of the Rev. George Whelpton Johnson,
Vicar of Fairwarp. He left two daughters, one born three months
after his death. His will also states he was ”late of Fairwarp
Vicarage”. He was appointed by the Admiralty to lecture officers.
He had navigated one of Rozhesturnsky’s battleships at the
battle of Taushima (was presented with a telescope from the Czar
and was one of the few survivors) damaged his vision by frost and
so had to give up his naval career. He gained a B.A. and LL.B. at
Cambridge (he was a rowing Blue) and a scholarship for the Inns
of the Court, passing with distinction. Buried in Skew Bridge Cemetery,
Gallipoli.
Extract from the Sussex Agricultural Express 18 June 1915: FAIRWARP. KILLED AT THE DARDANELLES. — Lieut.-Commander Herbert Clyde Evans, R.N.V.R., Nelson Battalion, Royal Naval Division was killed at the Dardanelles, aged 32, was the youngest son of the late John T. Evans, shipowner Gisborne, New Zealand and son-in-law of the Rev. G. Whelpton Johnson, Vicar of Fairwarp. Educated at Gisborne, he was apprenticed in one of his father's ships, and served eight years in the Mercantile Service. He was first officer in a ship in the service of the Russians during the Russo-Japanese War, and was at the fall of Port Arthur; he was wrecked near Siberia, where his eyesight was so injured by the frost that he had to relinquish the sea. He then entered St. John's College, Cambridge, taking a second-class B.A. and a second-class LL.B., and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. At the outbreak of war he was appointed lecturer to officers by the Admiralty, and went out to the Dradenelles as Lieutenant-Commander on March 1st. Evans was mentioned in Sir Ian Hamilton's Despatches [London Gazette, 5 Nov. 1915], for gallant and distinguished service in the field. He m. at Fairwarp Church, Sussex, 25 March, 1913, Constance (Clevedon, Newick, Sussex), dau. of the Rev. George Wehlpton Johnson, Vicar of Fairwarp, and had two daus. : Constance Joy Nelson, b. 7 Aug. 1914 ; and Grace Nina Clyde, b. posthumous, 9 Aug. 1915.
