Son of Charles Burgess, of Reid's Cottage, Wartling Hill, Pevensey, Sussex. Native of Boreham St., Hailsham. Formerly G/7612, Royal Sussex Regiment. Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY, ROUEN, Seine-Maritime, France. Plot A. Row 32. Grave 2. Note: Albert was born in 1885 registered as Burgess but always known as Hazelden. This Albert enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regt G/7612 at Eastbourne in 1915 using his legal surname Burgess. In the local paper it records Albert Hazelden enlists in RSR in summer of 1915 and that his name was inscribed on the roll in Westham church porch of those who were serving in. It seems they use the name Hazelden that he was known by locally in the paper and on the roll in the church porch. Albert Burgess RSR transfers to the MGC 12165 and his medal card demonstrates this. It seems his legal surname of Burgess was used on both the granite cross and the memorial plaque in Westham Church but his everyday surname by which get was known was used on the tenor bell. The fact he used two surnames, his paternal genetic name Hazelden and his grandfather's legal surname Burgess has led to this confusion. |
