WORMLEIGHTON WAR MEMORIAL

The Wormleighton memorial is to be found in front of the Manor House, Wormleighton, Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. It takes the form of a two-stepped base surmounted by a square plinth and an obelisk with carved inscriptions on two sides of the plinth. There are seven names listed for World War 1 and and two for World War 2 showing surname, initials, rank, regiment. There is also a memorial scroll in the church with the same names.

1914-1918

BAKER	Bernard	Private, Hampshire Regiment, discharged for agricultural purposes. Passed away at home 23rd December 1917. Aged 18, death registered at Southam.
BAKER	Ernest George	Private 28007, 10th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died of wounds Belgium 8th May 1917. Born Mollington, Oxon, enlisted Leamington, residence Wormleighton. Son of James and Matilda Baker, Wormleighton. Buried at Lissenthoek Military cemetery, Belgium. The battalion was part of the 19th (Western Division) which landed in France on 17th July 1915.
BURNETT	Fassett Arboum	[Private on memorial] Gunner 319435, 63 Company, Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA TF). Died in Malata Malta 1st August 1918. Aged 22. Casualties were evacuated to hospitals in Malta from the Salonika campaign. Born Pinell, Auckland, New Zealand, enlisted Finsbury, E.C. London. Son of Frederick and Jessie Burnett, Levant’s Lodge, Earl’s Croome, Worcester. Formerly 3010, Honourable Artillery Company. Buried Pieta Military cemetery, Malta.
GRANT	Alfred George	Gunner 167902, Royal Garrison Artillery, 3rd Siege Battery. Born Fenny Compton, enlisted Rugby, residence Byefield. Killed in action France 5th October 1918. Buried Bellicourt British cemetery, France. The cemetery lies in close proximity to where the Hindenburg line was.
GREEN	Arthur	[Listed on memorial as Lance Corporal] Private 5303, 16th Lancers (the Queen’s). Born Leamington, enlisted Banbury, residence Banbury. Died of wounds France 5th December 1917. Buried St Sever cemetery extension, Rouen, France. The 16th Lancers was part of the 2nd Cavalry Division. The Division took part in the Cambrai operations between 30th November and 3rd December 1917.
TASKER	Percy Daniel	[Listed as Private on memorial] Lance Corporal 10472, 5th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 25th September 1915. Aged 29. Born Banbury, enlisted Rugby, residence Wormleighton. Son of Timothy and Caroline Tasker, Wormleighton. No known grave. Commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. The battalion landed in Boulogne and was part of the 14th Light Division. The Division fought bin the Second Attack on Bellewaarde between 25th and 25th September 1915.
WEST	William Robert	Corporal 1065, 1/5th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regiment. Killed in action Belgium 16th July 1915. Born Fenny Compton, enlisted Derby, residence Leamington. No known grave. Commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. The 1/5th Battalion landed in France on 25th February 1915 and was part of the 46th (North Midland) Division. During 1915 the Division fought in the Ypres salient.
1939-1945
PHIPPS	Charles	Ordinary Seaman P/JX 155858, H.M.S. Royal Oak, Royal Navy. Killed 14th October 1939 when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by U-47, with loss of 833 lives off Scapa Flow, Orkneys. Aged 18. Son of William and Elsie Phipps. No known grave. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
TANNER, AFM	Frederick George	Flying Officer 657648, RAF. Killed 16th July 1947. Aged 28 whilst with 8 Squadron RAF based in Aden. The squadron was equipped with Hawker Tempests and was air policing Aden area. Son of Charles and Laura Tanner; husband of Dorothy Tanner, Bearsden, Strathclyde. Awarded the Air Force Medal (AFM), gazetted 1st September 1944. Buried Maala Cemetery, Aden.
