The memorial is to be found in Abbey Park, 11 Monks Walk, Evesham, Wychavon, Herefordshire. It takes the form of a helmeted soldier with rifle surmounting a pedestal in the centre of a curved screen with a wreath above the central tablet. There are 256 names for World War 1 and 78 for World War 2. The memorial was made by the foundry J.W. Singer & Sons Ltd., sculpted by Henry Poole, designed by Harold E. Dicks. Originally unveiled 7 August 1921.

EVESHAM WAR MEMORIAL.
A Striking Feature for an Historic
Site.

On the slopes of Abbey Park, between the Avon and the famous Bell Tower, Evesham's war memorial was unveiled on Sun¬day. The spot is an historic one, and sin¬gularly appropriate as the site of the memorial. Over six hundred years ago the great knight, Simon de Montfort, died there for the liberty of England, as our soldiers did in France, and he was buried in the Abbey, which stood there and traces of which still remain.

Evesham subscribed nearly £3,000 for the war memorial, which is a striking addition to Abbey Park. There is a semi-circular walk, with walls of Cotswold stone of vary¬ing heights, and stone seats, and a central pedestal, on which is the bronze figure of a British soldier in full fighting kit. The out¬side length of the memorial is 57 feet, and from front to back 20 feet. The figure is 6ft. 10in. high, and from the paving to the top of the figure the height is 19ft. 6in. The figure is striking and impressive, and the face bears an expression of grim determina¬tion. The sculptor was Mr. Henry Poole, A.R.A. The memorial was designed by, Mr. H. E. Dicks, Evesham. Mrs. Hayes-Rudge purchased the freehold of the piece of land required for the site, and presented it to the town in the name of her son.

The ex-Service men paraded in High-street and marched to Abbey Park, headed by the civil military band. The Earl of Coventry, Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Com-mander B. M. Eyres-Monsell, M.P., High Steward of Evesham, and those assisting in the ceremony, accompanied by the Mayor and Corporation, and borough officials, and headed by the town band, proceeded to the memorial from the Town Hall. There was a special enclosure for relatives of those who lost their lives in the war. The clergy of different denominations in the town and the massed bands and combined choirs took part in the service.

Over 5.000 persons were present at the unveiling, including 560 ex-Service men on parade.

Lord Coventry, in unveiling the figure, said it was right and proper that they should place on record for all time their great appreciation of those valiant men who made the supreme sacrifice with all humility. He prayed that they might receive the great re¬ward which they believed was set apart for those who had done their duty nobly and well in life, and served their country faithfully in a just cause. He hoped that in years to come their descendants would point to those beautiful war memorials as emblems of a glorious victory which ulti¬mately led to universal peace and goodwill amongst all the nations of the earth.

Commander Byres-Monsell unveiled the tablets, which were inscribed with the names of 220 Evesham men who had fallen. He said another world war would mean the end of civilisation, and it was the people of this: country alone who, by being true to them¬selves and presenting a front to the world, could pull the world round and give them shat they fought for.
