DODDINGTON WAR MEMORIAL

The Doddington War Memorial is in the grounds of St Mary's Church, Church Lane, Doddington and takes the form of a Fleury cross on a spire mounted ona plinth. The plinth has a shield on each face with the Tudor Rose on the top corner of each face and laurel wreaths at the bottom corners. There are 36 names listed for World War 1 and 5 for World War 2. Monies were raised by public subscription and the mason and builder was Mr R Wade; the memorial was unveiled on 23rd December 1920.

From an old postcard

The Doddington War Memorial was dedicated by the Rev. A.F. Smith, (Rector in charge), on 23^rd September, 1920. It was unveiled by Mrs. C.E. Stephens, wife of the village Doctor. The monument was designed and built by Mr. Robert Wade of Doddington. On the same day the plaques inside the church and the Methodist Chapel were also unveiled.

The WW2 names were added and plaque’s were produced for Church and Chapel by Robert Cox & Son’s of Peterborough. The Chapel plaque and War Memorial were unveiled by Dr C. Thomas, the village Doctor, on 10^th November 1946.

CROOTE, Walter Edwin. Private, 2192, 1st battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment (T.F). Son of George Croote, Yardman on farm, by his wife Emma, dau. of Henry Croote; born Walsoken co. Norfolk 25-6-1895; educated Christ Church near Wisbech, Cambs, was employed on a farm at Doddington, co Cambs and voluntarily enlisted 2-9-1914. Went to France with his battalion 14-2-1915, was trained as a bomber, scout and stretcher-bearer, and for the few months before his death was cheif orderly to his commanding officer; was present at the second Battle of Ypres in may 1915, and also at actions at Armentieres and Frise. Died 29-8-1916 in an operating station, of wounds received in action in France. Buried in the British cemetery eight miles east of Doullens.Captain Strickland, commanding his company, wrote of him "He was wounded on the morning of the 28th August, 1916. He was my cheif orderly, and was sleeping in a little shelter he had erected for himself, just outside my dug out. A shell hit the parapet just where he was and knocked it in , burying your son underneath the debris. We dug him out, but found his right leg badly broken, as well as his right arm. He was badly hurt but wonderfully brave, and i hoped he would have pulled through, though he would have lost both legs and an arm. The doctor gave me hope that he would not die, and I was very cut up to hear of his death. He was in every way a fine fellow, being a trained bomber, scout and stretcher bearer, everybody liked him, and he is badly missed. He did some grand work out here, especially in one attack, where he was continually running for me , and obtained news under very heavy shell fire". Unm

Formerly 3rd Suffolk Regiment, discharged 3 December 1918, invalided to hospital on 15 December 1918. Died at 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge, 9 March 1919. In the 1911 census he was aged 13, son of Harry and Lydia Mason, working on farm, born Doddington, resident Wibmblington Road, Doddington. Not a CWGC grave. His death was registered in the Cambridge Registration District in the January to March Quarter 1919, he was aged 21. Buried in St. Mary's Churchyard, Doddington.

in Normandy

Mr. and Mrs Jana Clarke of New World, Doddington, have received the sad news of the death in action of their fourth son Sig. Stanley James Clarke, of the Royal Artillery. A letter from his officer says that he was killed instantly on July 22nd.

Sig. Clarke had been in the Army Just over five years and was one of the first local boys called to the Colours under the Military Service Act of 1939. Born in New World, he went to Benwick School, and later was employed as a grocer's assistant by Mr. Fred Smith, of Benwick, up to the time of his calling up.

Signaller Stanley James Clarke, of New World, Doddington, who, as we reported last week, was killed in action in Normandy. The fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. James Clarke, of New World, he was attached to the Royal Artillery. He had been in the Army just over five years.

Pte. George W. Pamby,
of Doddington

Mr. H. Pamby, 1, Council Houses, Doddington, received the tragic news on Monday in an official letter that his son, Pte. Gordon William Pamby, has been killed in action on the Western Front.

Just 14 days before Mr. Pamby received an official letter stating that his son was wounded on the date on which he was later reported killed, so that it appears he lived a very little time after receiving wounds.

Pte. Pamby only joined the Forces in April of last year and was sent overseas in October. He would have been 19 years of age on March 24th. Previous to military service he worked for Messrs. T. Lowe & Sons, contractors, in various parts of Huntingdonshire as a bricklayer, and later was employed by Mr. Melton, of Chatteris. He was of a very happy disposition and his many friends in the district will hear with much regret the news of his death.

Private,, Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry, killed in action Spion Kop, South Africa 24January 1900 Aged 22. Son of Stephen & Jane Frost of Benwick. This memorial was formerly in the church at Benwick before it was demolished. Also commemorated on the Ely Boer War Memorial.
