This brass plaque is on the south wall of the nave of
Ely Cathedral. A further bronze
plaque on the exterior of the east end of Great St Mary’s church in Cambridge
for the men of Cambridgeshire. A combined
list from both memorials is available.

Battalion, Scots Guards. Died of disease, Modder River, 3rd February
1900, age 41. Born July 1858, Warrant Officer for 6 years and
obtained his commission in the Scots Guards in May 1891. Served
in Egyptian Expedition 1882 (medal and bar, Khedives (bronze)
star), present at the action at Mahuta, and the battle of Tel-el-Kebir.
Accompanied his battalion to South Africa in October 1899 and
served with it up to the time of his death. Buried in Ely Cemetery,
Cambridgeshire.
